PERFORMING YOUR BEST AT TRYOUTS

The following commentary contains excerpts from an article published in the Spring 2003 issue of Volleyball USA by Kelly Bourne, as well as the thoughts and ideas from our coaching staff.

Athletes always want to perform their best at tryouts.  It is an exciting time, yet can be stressful if they are not prepared.  Being prepared will help you to maximize your chance of being selected for the team of your choice.  Here are several tips to help you put forth your best performance:

Be prepared

  • Arrive early to tryouts. Plan for traffic and know how to get to the tryout location. Walking in late will certainly help you to stand out, but I wouldn't suggest it. There may be a long line at registration, and you want to give yourself enough time to put on your shoes (Side note-do not decide to “break in” your new court shoes on tryout day.), knee pads, hair ties, tryout number, etc so that you are not rushed.

  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before and eat a nutritional meal prior to the tryout (don't skip breakfast).  Your body will need fuel to get you through the 2-3 hour session.  It is good to bring a water bottle with you so that you don’t have to stand in line at the water fountain.

Stand out in a crowd

  • Everyone will wear bright colors. If the club gives you a t-shirt at the tryout, be cautious before you go put it on…is everyone else doing that?…remember, you want to STAND OUT.  A shirt with your name on it will definitely stick with a coach. Something that makes it easy for them to point you out to another coach.

  • Feel free to introduce yourself to the coaching staff…especially the ones that are coaching your age group.  Note, I said staff…not just one coach.  Coaches get input from fellow coaches at tryouts, and you want to catch the eye of as many coaches as you can in addition to the head coach.

Be loud and energetic

  • Volleyball is a quick and exciting game that is full of momentum shifts.  It is great to have an athlete on a team full of energy and excitement.

Have a great attitude and be coachable

  • Having a great attitude will make a good impression on a coach.  Coaches want someone on their team that is  positive and encouraging to their teammates.  Keep a smile on your face and be friendly.  If you make a mistake, do not get down on yourself or start talking negatively.

Be a team player

  • Coaches are looking for athletes that work well together and make each other better.  Do your best at tryouts to perform good skills, which will make the other athlete’s jobs easier.  High five them when they do perform well.  Compliment them them when they do well, and encourage them when they make a mistake.

Be a leader

  • During drills, step up to the front of the line and be willing to try the skill first.  Be a vocal leader by encouraging the other athletes and communicate constantly when playing on the court.

Volleyball is an ever-evolving sport.  We recognize this and teach the most current strategies and techniques.  Our coaches are educated in the USA National Team and High Performance techniques, and many have been trained directly by the National Team staff. We dedicate ourselves to constant improvement of our staff and athletes.  Our core training programs include:   Technical Training, Leadership Training, Coach and Player Development.   Our goal each season is for the athletes to finish the season better prepared to handle and compete with the elite in the nation.  All of these contribute to one key factor, constant growth.

Our dedication to the mission is stronger than ever and we are ecstatic about our location at Net Results.  All practices will be held at Net Results and Greenhill high school.  Both locations provide an excellent training venue for the athletes.

Make the right choice and explore what everyone is talking about.  VICTORY is the place to be!  To learn more about our mission, coaches, and programs, we encourage your athlete to attend our open gyms and pre-tryout clinics.  They are a great way to experience VICTORY first hand.  We also invite you to attend our informational meeting held in mid-October.

Speaking from a parent's perspective...

Parents of Victory athletes share their experience with our club

“From one parent to another…Why Victory?  They offer key components to succeed in volleyball.  Knowledge of the game.  Training of skills and strategy.  These are things we as the parent come to expect from a volleyball club.  However, there are other aspects we have found at Victory which are equally important on and off the court.  There is understanding that communication, developing a sense of team and mental preparation are also needed for the success of each player.  These all transcend to other aspects of life as well.

And then we have asked ourselves, who are we entrusting our daughter to?  Just as all parents, we understand the influence that others can have on our children.  We want her to be exposed to people with integrity, people who care about not only how well you play the game but how you conduct yourself on and off the court.  This is what we found at Victory.”- The Merediths 13 Elite

 ======

“Victory Volleyball Club – It’s a well-run professional business with a warm family approach and feel.  We spend so much time, energy and money during a club season, it is important to be in a place where both the girls and parents are happy.

From the parent information meeting to when the last game ball drops at Nationals for the last playing Victory team, the season will be great for the entire family.  It is combination of everything – coaches, team selection, facilities, scheduling, clinics, families of the players, uniforms, the quantity of teams, tournament selection, travel accommodations, awards banquet – Victory does what is best for the girls to learn and grow both on the court and off.

On the chance something does not go right, Victory will MAKE it right.  The staff will rally and address the situation head-on.

We are hoping to be part of the Victory family for our 4th year season – there is no place we would rather call home.”- The Brunsons 16 Elite

  ======

“I am so thankful my girls have had the opportunity to play for Victory.  We have experienced other clubs and felt like a vital part was missing.  When we came to Victory over 2 years ago, we knew right away it was a place we could grow. Not only have my girls developed skill through the hard work during the season, but they have also grown spiritually, as well. Through weekly team meeting, or, Cross Training, they have built a bond with their team mates and that goes beyond volleyball. In those critical times on the court and off, they know they can count on each other and most importantly, God. I am always impressed with the depth of skill development and knowledge of the coaches they come in contact with. What these coaches do for them always goes above and beyond. Having had the joy of watching my daughter play in the Junior National Championships the last two years is something I will never forget. It is always bittersweet. You are so proud of what they have accomplished as a individual and a team, but so sad when it has to end. As for my family, Victory is a place we are proud to be. It is a place where athletes grow in all areas of life. A top ranked club with conviction, morals and a standard above the rest. Teaching players to "Live to Win"!”- The Kools, 12 National and 14 Elite

  ======

“We first noticed the Victory teams when Nicole was playing 13s and we saw them gather together after the match for a prayer.  Nicole played several years for another club and had great playing success, but it just didn’t meet all of her needs.  When she decided it was time to make a change, Victory was the first club she wanted to look at.  Through the bonding during boot camps and cross training, Nicole found what she was looking for in a club to make playing volleyball the most rewarding experience.  The girls not only bond with their team, but the whole club.  After a match at a tournament, one of the first things the girls ask is what other Victory team is playing so they can go cheer them on.

Nicole is planning on playing volleyball in college.  Tony Vordenbaum and all of the coaches have been wonderful in helping her achieve her goals.  When she makes the final decision on what college she will attend, we know she will have had the best advice and will make the decision that will benefit her for a lifetime”- The Marziks, 16 Elite

 ======

“Our daughter has played for Victory for 2 years and we hope to call it home for many more.  In addition to providing the right environment and excellent coaching, Victory Volleyball Club promotes team bonding on and off the court, cross training and community service opportunities.   Our daughter has not only learned how to excel in volleyball, but has become a well-rounded individual and teammate.  She has also learned how hard work and dedication can turn into success as they qualified for Nationals last year and competed very well.  We have been extremely happy with Victory and our daughter absolutely loves it!” –The Fates, 12 Elite

“My daughter played for Victory Volleyball Club last year.  She was on their 12's team.  Before she joined their team, I was concerned about Club volleyball.  I had heard from other parents that it can be a stressful, difficult experience.  I was pleasantly surprised at our experience with Victory.  The coaches were very professional and encouraging.  They focused on teaching the fundamentals of volleyball.  They had high expectations for all of the girls, yet they would be the first to cheer for them when they accomplished their goals.  It was refreshing to me that my daughter could be coached by an A+ coach, and still be in a Christian environment.  So many times, we as parents feel that it's impossible to have the best of both worlds.  With Victory Volleyball club, it is possible.  Last year was a rewarding experience.  She not only grew physically, but spiritually as well.  We can't wait to start another season with them. –The Cruse Family, 12 National

  ======

“Our daughter has played for Victory the past 2 years and it’s been a very positive experience.  We’re grateful for a club like Victory – the teaching, the competition and its ideals and standards.” – The Slovers, 13 National

 ======

“We began looking at Victory because of the great coaching staff.  We wanted a good coach that could help take our daughter to the next level of play.  We got that and so much more.   After playing a year for Victory, she increased her skill level and grew so much as an athlete, gained a deeper understanding of team, grew in her faith, learned about the role nutrition plays in an athlete’s performance, and gained insight and tools to improve her mental endurance.  As a result, she is more confident and has taken on a leadership role on the court at her school.”- The Fields, 13 Elite

======

“Being part of the Victory family is such a blessing!  The coaches are outstanding and create such a positive atmosphere while encouraging the girls to reach beyond what they think they can do.   By emphasizing not only the physical but the spiritual as well, the girls want to push do their very best for themselves, the team and the Lord.  The growth we have seen in our daughter is amazing and we can't imagine being anywhere else!”- The Thorntons, 14 National

 ======

“As “rookie” volleyball club parents, we were not quite sure what to expect from our daughter’s experience with Victory.  What we found were hard working, talented girls who were intensely coached using different styles all for the purpose of glorifying God.

We were blessed by and grateful to be part of the Victory community as it experienced the tragic loss of one of its own, Taylor, during the 2010 season.

Not only is Victory a top quality volleyball organization, but a group of people who “live to win” on and off the court.  For our daughter, her volleyball skills and love for the game increased significantly.  Additionally, she learned challenging circumstances make a person stronger.  Our first season with Victory was engaging, fun, and fulfilling.” –The Whitmire Family, 12 National

 ======

“After many years of experience at Victory Volleyball, we feel that Victory is our volleyball home.  In this home, our daughters have experienced leaders who have a relationship with God through Christ.  These leaders have set the example that God is a part of everything we do – even competitive sports.

            Both our players have received very good coaching and instruction, as well as the invaluable experience of playing on a competitive team.  They have learned to work with different types of coaches and teammates.  In our Victory Volleyball home, we may not have always gotten “our way” in playing time or in making a certain team, but we have always felt the support of the Victory leadership.

            Our daughters have felt the support from coaches and other players during injury and other difficult times in their lives.  We lived covered by love and support through the death of our teammate on the 14 National Team in 2010.  The outreach of Victory Volleyball to the family of Taylor Storch, and her entire team is beyond what my words can express.

            I believe that through Victory Volleyball, our daughters have achieved success beyond what they could have accomplished without this volleyball family.   Our daughters have had success, not just on the court, but also success in developing them into the young women God intends.  We appreciate the tireless efforts of the people who make Victory Volleyball what it is today.” –The Swishers, 14 National

 ======

"Victory Volleyball.....three years ago when our 11-year old daughter began talking to us about wanting to play at the next level of volleyball, we began asking ourselves which club offers a safe, enjoyable and competitive environment all within a Christian perspective?  We were introduced to Victory thru a family that sang the praises of the club; so we decided to give it a try.  Not only has Victory met our expectations, but in the last 2 seasons, Victory has exceeded our goals for our daughter.  We have watched our daughter grow spiritually, mentally and in her confidence in the game of volleyball.  The coaches have pushed, pulled, challenged, encouraged and prayed for the girls in every season.  When we asked her if she wanted to try out for other clubs for the 14's, she quickly declined sighting that Victory was the only team she had any desire to play for.  Enough said for us!" –The Blagburns, 13 Elite

 ======

“My daughter, Megan, has played club volleyball with Victory for 2 seasons now, and will hopefully wrap up her club career there with the upcoming U18 season.
We have thoroughly enjoyed the entire Victory experience and mostly enjoyed the Christian environment surrounding that experience.  We feel that no endeavor should be untaken without taking into consideration the question of whether the endeavor is for our glory or for the glory of God.  By remembering to pray before and after games and to do devotions throughout the week after practices, it brings the sport into it's true perspective.
We feel our daughter has grown as a Christian and as an athlete while playing with Victory, and we are sorry we didn't have her come to play with this club sooner.” The Clarys, 17 Elite

 ======

“The ages 11-18 are some of the hardest years that our children will face.  Things that other children and adults say are often taken to heart.  It is so important, then, to surround your children with people who are positive, moral, and encouraging.  That is what you will find at Victory VBC.  It is a place where teammates become best friends and coaches become treasured mentors.  It is a place that builds your child’s self-image and self-worth, rather than tearing them down. It is NOT a place that fosters or allows attitudes and selfishness.  Practices are challenging, competitive, and innovative; and, tournaments are where we earn our name!  Victory VBC is where Christian values and quality volleyball meet, and that is right where we want our daughter to be.  If you feel the same way, have your daughter try out for Victory VBC, too.  You won’t regret it.” –The Stuart Family, 13 Elite

 ======

“It was both an honor and privilege for my daughter to experience playing for Victory last season. It was our second year of being involved in “Club Volleyball.” What an absolutely pleasant experience the Victory staff made it for my daughter, my husband and myself.

The Victory coaches, as well as the entire organization, could not have been more dedicated, supportive and organized. No matter what age level, or team that you play for, Victory finds a way to make the entire organization feel like one big family. As parents, we felt completely well informed about everything from practices and tournaments to all the travel information.

One of the things we felt was most important to us when choosing which club to play for was to find a club and coach that would encourage and push our daughter to try and achieve her best ability while at the same time keeping her confident. In addition, we wanted our daughter to feel like she fit in and connect with her teammates. Victory was the perfect fit for us. Not only do we feel our daughter was well coached and pushed to try and reach a higher playing level, she fell in LOVE with her teammates and the whole Victory staff.

All that said, in the end, the most wonderful part of Victory is their emphasis on being a Christian-based club. There is no better lesson for a child than to learn that your faith needs to be a part of your everyday life and be incorporated into everything you do. Not just when you attend church.” – The Bodnars 13 National

 ======

“When we were looking for a volleyball club 4 years ago, we were only thinking VOLLEYBALL.  We found Victory Volleyball Club to be a strong  competitor locally, regionally and nationally with top-notch coaches.  But what we have gotten out of our Victory experience is so much more than volleyball.  The coaches have been such great role models for our daughter.  They have always been very encouraging, supportive and true mentors to the girls.  Middle school and high school can be tough years and we have seen our daughter grow and mature so much and we truly believe the mentoring and relationships she has had with the Victory coaches has played a huge part.  Also, our daughter has made some incredible friends with such strong bonds that they will be life long friends.   And while the season definitely keeps our family busy, I know we will look back at these Victory years as being some of the most fun years of our life.” –The Fischers, 14 Elite

 ======

“My daughter has been with Victory for two seasons and it has been such an amazing experience.  She has not only learned how to excel at volleyball but has learned how hard work and dedication translate into success.  Through focus on team building, Cross Training and respect for each other, she has learned the value of teamwork and gained many lasting friendships that have made her into a more confident person.   We can't say enough about Victory and their outstanding coaching staff.  They do what they do because they truly love volleyball and want to provide a positive Christian environment for the girls and the results of their successes don't lie.” –The Baker Family, 12 Elite

 ======

“A few years ago, my daughter chose Victory Volleyball Club because of its reputation for great coaching, Christian values and a winning tradition.  The coaches are some of the best in the area, and they are really committed to developing their athletes to play at the next level.  They also focus on helping the girls to be the best they can be, both athletically and personally.  The weekly devotions both inspire and challenge the girls in their walk with Christ and relationships with others.   We also feel that the players and families are a big part of what makes Victory special as well.  We parents have a lot of fun on the sidelines during tournaments, and the girls on the teams develop wonderful friendships that will last a lifetime.  Last year, my younger daughter played for Victory too, and had a similar experience.  Both of my girls have seen huge improvement in their play and skill development while playing for Victory.  So if you’re looking for a volleyball club, I would wholeheartedly recommend Victory.”- The Arnolds 13 National

 ======

“Our daughter joined Victory last year as the 15 Elite team Libero.  Renea and Steve instilled in Allison the drive to work hard and do her best, and helped her mature into the person and player she is today.  Victory helped develop Allison's confidence and taught her life lessons such as perseverance, self-esteem and discipline.  At Victory, you will find a community of players, coaches, and parents.  This was really demonstrated to us after the death of Taylor Storch.  We were so impressed with how the entire Victory community supported the Storch family in the tragic loss of Taylor.  We believe that Victory is one of Texas' premier clubs - they provide quality instruction, amazing coaches, and a nurturing, positive Christian environment.  We are so glad to have become a part of the Victory community, and to have had such a positive club experience.” –The Seager Family, 15 Elite

 ======

 “What does it mean to be a Victory parent?  It means that your daughter has become part of a volleyball family that is based on Christian values and beliefs.  It means that your daughter will learn to push herself to try to reach her volleyball potential.  But most important of all, it means that your daughter’s best interests, both on and off the court, will truly be the focus of the club.  These are the reasons why I am proud that my daughter, Olivia, played on the 16 National team last season.” –The Kleyers, 16 National

 ======

“We are a volleyball family – meaning we have not one but two daughters of different ages involved in club volleyball. We are also a Victory Family! We were drawn to Victory for several reasons. First and foremost was the atmosphere we felt throughout the club.

It is not just about winning but about nurturing and growing the girls to be productive young women. Our daughters not only learned a great deal about volleyball but also about acting responsibly, team and friend dynamics, as well as ensuring you are keeping everything in the “right perspective”. After all, it is not all about Volleyball….really!

Secondly, we were impressed with the coaching staff. The caliber and quality of coaches that Victory offers is really unmatched elsewhere. Our daughters’ coaches and assistants were incredible in the ways they were able to motivate and teach the team skills, strategy, and the finer “points” of volleyball. Plus the additional opportunities to learn and participate in the clinics, workouts, and positionals with the rest of the Victory Coaching Staff was an excellent way to be exposed to different feedback and coaching. When you have a selection of coaches that are current High School Varsity Coaches, former

ranked College Players, Coaches with 20+ years of experience, and finally, Nationally Recognized and Awarded Coaches – how could you go wrong? We were very pleased with our experience with the coaches – they were professional with great lines of communication, and a willingness to help in any way they could.

Thirdly, speaking of communication, one of the hardest things to do in club volleyball is to make sure parents are kept informed of everything that is going on with the team and club. Victory does an outstanding job with their commitment to ensure information is quickly and freely communicated to the players and parents. From the Victory website to the coaches’ communications to the team coordinator’s emails – we always felt we had the latest information.

As a final comment, we were fortunate enough to be on a team that went to Nationals in 2010.   The experience that our daughter (and we as parents) took away from going to Nationals was truly one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences. We hope to have more of those fun experiences going forward. We highly recommend Victory and trust and pray that your daughter has the same wonderful experience with Victory as our daughters have.” – The Pressly Family 12 Elite and 15 Elite

 ======

Our daughter has been part of the Victory family for 3 years.  What we value about Victory is that the teams are competitive but they follow their values and beliefs!  My favorite tradition about Victory is the group prayer after each game.  The Victory team always asks the opposing team to pray with them whether they win or lose.  There have only been a few times where the opposing team has not prayed with our girls.  I love watching the girls bond over our Lord!  Win or lose they always remember what this life is about and they act on that.  This is something the girls will take with them long after volleyball is over!- The Birdsongs 17 Elite

 ======

The heart of Victory is exactly the kind of club that you want your kids representing.  Their focus on competitiveness along with developing the heart and soul of the athlete is part what gives Victory its heartbeat.  At the end of the day, on and off the court, the girls are playing and training for something much bigger than just vball, and that is a blessing any way you look at it. The idea that they can keep that perspective and compete with anyone around town is pretty unique. –The Luce Family 16 Elite
